What is the best time of day?
When shooting outdoor portraits the most flattering light is achieved early in the morning and late afternoon or evening up to an hour before sunset. If there is sufficient shade from something like a tree we can shoot anytime of the day.
Choose a time, morning or evening, when the youngsters are at their peak and will be well rested and fed beforehand.
How long will the session last?
Plan to allow up to 1-1/2 hours for your portrait session although it could be shorter. It is critical that we allow your child time to relax and move beyond the “I’m on stage” effect.
How to choose the location?
Choose somewhere special and important to you; home, back yard, or a park. Bear in mind that if we schedule an outdoor photo shoot we need to have a bad weather back-up plan. The studio is available but children often are more at ease in an environment that is familiar to them.
What to wear?
For a classic look that is simple and timeless, fabrics in solid neutral colors are best. Denim or khaki work well for casual looks. Fabrics with a very busy pattern or logo are distracting. Jewelry should be minimal. Avoid wearing watches.
For family or group shots, choose colors in the same tonal range so no individual stands out. Plan to wear either all dark solid colors for a very traditional look, or all lighter neutral tones for a more casual look. Coordinate your outfits including hosiery and shoes.
Newborns are best photographed in their birthday suit or just a diaper. When parents are being photographed with the baby, wear a dark color shirt or outfit to blend into the background and heighten emphasis on your baby.
What should I have on hand for the session?
Bring along what you need to keep you and your child clean and happy: diapers, wipes, water, snacks, etc. Also bring a favorite toy that makes noise as we may use it to get your child’s attention.
